UV Technology

How clean is your Coil?

ImageIn the past Ultra Violet Light has been available commercially and utilised in the purification of water. Using UVC technology in HVAC systems is a relatively new concept, the reason for this is that the UVC was never strong enough to have an impact on the conditions that these systems present ie cold, damp fast moving air. That was until now.

The challenge of cleaning and maintaining cooling coils in commercial buildings has often proved difficult if not impossible and can be very problematic when trying to maintain indoor air quality at the same time as reducing energy, maintenance and labour costs.

Having worked closely with E-CO who are specialist suppliers of complete building and area air purification technology based upon the application of a new generation of UVC and the only company to have a patent for this application, the Four Seasons Group has begun the process of introducing this technology to its clients.

ImageThe UVC technology   is designed to be easily retro fitted into existing HVAC systems and a mature product line is available for any size Air Handling Unit, Fan Coil or Cassette Unit. Located either upstream or downstream of the cooling coil the technology will return cooling coils to an as built condition and will perpetually clean the coils 24/7 providing pure conditioned air to the occupied spaces. Therefore preventing the spread of cold and flu viruses and other airborne transmitted diseases, this will have a direct impact on reducing staff absenteeism in the workplace.

In addition to the Health benefits, significant reductions in Energy, Maintenance and Labour costs can be achieved eliminating the need for a costly coil cleaning programme.

According to E-CO this UVC technology is the best solution for IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) problems and can provide an energy saving of between 10-20%, which is an obvious advantag  e to any company looking to improve its Green credentials, and will assist in Health and Safety compliance.

Having been approached by E-CO we introduced the concept to one of our largest retail clients who were looking to improve the energy efficiency of their system with the view to improving the working conditions and reduce the absenteeism of their staff.

Since initially installing the UVC emitters in a number of cassettes throughout the store the client has noted an improvement in working conditions by monitoring staff absenteeism, where there has been a significant reduction.  So much so that they have agreed to have the UVC system fitted in 3 of their other stores.

ImageThe picture on the right shows a Petri Dish test from inside the cassette unit before we installed the UVC technology in the above mentioned store and represents microbial growth over a seven day period. Mould will multiply every 6 hours so even in a short period of time this would become considerably worse. Most cooling coils are cleaned once/twice a year which means there would tend to be 180 days between cleans and subsequent mould would be considerably worse than and pose a health risk. After only 30 days exposure to UVC the microbial growth was eliminated.
